Becoming a sibling is a strange thought for any first born who has always had parents’ full attention on them. These books do a fantastic job of preparing your child for the new arrival and the changes that come with it.
Importantly, though, they teach that a younger sibling is the greatest gift in the world.
So start on the right foot and get your first born excited about a larger family with books that teach love, independence and sister or brotherhood!
A new baby is a big change for families. For some children, a new baby can bring up fears that the new baby will take their place and that parents may not have enough love for the new baby and the first child. While we know that we have enough love for all, kids may be concerned about this. This book, a follow up to the excellent book A Kissing Hand, reminds Chester the raccoon that his mum has plenty of love and kisses for both of them!

With marvelously humorous illustrations by David Clark, this “lap book” (the child goes on one side of Mom’s expanding lap, the book on the other) explains to a small child just what the changes are that are taking place in the family and what the expected younger sibling will mean for the older sibling.

This series of four board books deals with the anticipation of waiting for the new baby, the excitement of the arrival itself, and the beginnings of the special relationship that develops between siblings. The simple conversational text and lively illustrations are carefully designed to encourage further dialogue between reader and child.

This book is a beautiful story from a child’s perspective on the birth of a sibling. It’s a must-read for any family planning a homebirth or planning for their other children to be present for a sibling’s birth. It presents the birth process factually while still conveying the almost indescribable beauty of new life entering a family. The illustrations are beautifully tender.

Daniel Tiger is a fun and relatable character for kids. I like that this book discusses how Daniel is a big helper with the new baby. I also like how this book puts a positive spin on becoming an older sibling. My son has really taken to this book and it has helped us prepare him to become a big brother.

This book was such an important book to our family before, during, and after the arrival of our second child. It taught our daughter that being a big sister meant being patient, and also how new babies can change the family dynamic. I also appreciated the advice from a psychologist at the end, that explained how to approach this topic with children.

Just wanted to recommend a children’s book that we used. My daughter was almost 2 when her brother was born. Even though she was very little, it was important to us for her to understand her exciting new role as a big sister and how life would be with her new brother (as best she could).
