For conversational students, I recommend Colloquial Portuguese of Brazil 2. Several dialogues in this book use everyday colloquialisms. You can buy the accompanying CDs to listen to the dialogues and practice your listening skills. This 2008 book uses current language.

Crônicas Brasileiras brings 35 Brazilian chronicles. After each text are questions about the text and grammar and vocabulary exercises. I love the texts. Great Brazilian writers like Fernando Sabino, Rubem Braga, Paulo Mendes Campo, Rachel de Queiroz, and Paulo Rónai are represented. Remember that you must enjoy reading to enjoy this book. The texts are not exactly direct and objective. It’s not a magazine article.

Get three textbooks (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), nine CDs (around an hour each), free online learning resources, and even audio downloads. Second, and more importantly, the Living Language book will take you from zero to fluency in Brazilian Portuguese without requiring you to buy any other materials. Finally, the value for money is excellent! This course is based on four approaches perfected over 65 years to maximize student learning: It teaches you basic vocabulary that native speakers use. Words become phrases and then sentences as you learn more words. Second, it takes small steps to avoid overwhelm. You will gradually gain fluency without even realizing it! Third, it teaches you the language in various ways, allowing you to read, listen, learn grammar and vocabulary, and practice speaking all at once. Finally, it emphasizes grammar explanations, so you understand what you’re learning rather than just memorizing it.

If you want to become fluent in Portuguese, then you need a good foundation. This book is meant to serve as such and will teach you the most commonly used 2000 words and phrases that are essential for connecting with other Portuguese speakers. This book also has conceptual vocabulary, helping you build up your skills before reading more complex sentences. Also, this book helps you to learn the phonetic spelling of the 2000 Portuguese words and phrases. This book can be used as a reference for people who want to learn more Portuguese words and phrases, or for those who want to practice speaking new words and improve their listening comprehension. This is an excellent book for people who do not know much about Portuguese and want to improve their fundamental skills. If you just started learning Portuguese, then this is a very useful book for you as it will help you expand your vocabulary further.

The most comprehensive book on the market. Most universities and language schools use it. It’s one of the few books that explain verb conjugation, verb tenses, and when to use them. Ponto de Encontro teaches Brazilian and Portuguese. The book explains the differences between the two versions of Portuguese in each grammar topic. Having used the book to teach Brazilian Portuguese, I believe it focuses on Brazilian Portuguese. It’s a big book. It was designed for college students, so most practice exercises, dialogues, and texts are aimed at them.

This is a good book for repetition exercises. It doesn’t explain grammar; it shows you how to do something and then makes you do exercises. This is for Brazil. Every chapter begins with dialogue or text. The textbook comes with CDs containing all the dialogues and texts (orange cover). This is a great book for students who like simple, repetitive exercises. Learning a language takes practice. It gradually builds vocabulary. The Caderno de Exercicios offers more practice.

Via Brasil brings short texts by Brazilian writers with vocabulary and grammar exercises. The book comes with two CDs that are sold separately. I always recommend getting the CDs. They can help you learn to listen and pronounce. Sadly, Amazon.com charges exorbitant prices for these CDs. For more information, visit Via Brasil. The book contains texts in both formal and informal language. Several texts add a cultural element to the learning process, adding to the book’s value. This is not a book to learn Portuguese. To use Via Brasil, you must have intermediate-mid reading skills.
