Addiction is a personal tale. Each one of us has different stories that lead us to where we are, and personal motives for what we do.
These books share powerful ideas and sequences of events that inspire many. They come highly recommended in this area of literature and are bound to affect anyone, regardless of their stage of recovery.

#1 Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

Codependent No More by Melody Beattie
Co-Dependent No More is especially helpful for the caregiver or partner of an addict. It helps this person recognize and change their own behaviors which are supporting the addict. While we cannot change another person, we can change ourselves and this book gives the reader the tools to modify their maladaptive behaviors. This will lead to a healthier and less enmeshed relationship with their loved one.

#2 The Craving Mind by Judson Brewer

The Craving Mind by Judson Brewer
I’m a hypnotherapist here in the United States. I recommend a book by Judson Brewer called The Craving Mind (From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits). This book answers important questions about addiction and describes how habits are formed.

It then explains how the practice of mindfulness can interrupt these unhealthy behaviors. I personally enjoyed this book, and many of my clients find it very helpful. Dr. Brewer is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist. He serves as director of research at the Center for Mindfulness and is associate professor in medicine and psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

#3 YOUR NAME AND COLORS by BP Greycastle

YOUR NAME AND COLORS by BP Greycastle
Baron Paul Greycastle has made one of the Greatest Discoveries of All Time. He shows, with a tremendous amount of lists, facts and figures, that the most famous and successful people in practically every career field: Archeologists, Artists, Athletes, Comedians, Composers, Designers, Doctors, Educators, Environmentalists, Health Gurus, Inventors, Journalists, Lawyers, Models, Musicians, Peace Makers, Photographers, Physicists, Positive-Thinking Philosophers, Promoters, Richest, Romantics, Sales People, Singers, Talk Show Hosts, Writers and many more, are successful because of their color-coded names. He proves, with undeniable evidence, that Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein owe their great knowledge of physics to their names.

He shows that our color-coded names determine who our romantic soul mate should be, what colors we should use in our homes and wardrobe to stimulate and create the 7 different home decor mood environments and project the fashion image styles (youthful, intellectual, harmonious, dramatic, corporate, romantic & sexy).
This is one of the greatest self-help books ever written. Find out what your name says about how to enhance your beauty, choose the right career, find the right romantic soul mate, build the best color/style wardrobe, and stimulate your 7 centers using your colors in your home or business environment. Greycastle claims that if his philosophy is accepted by the mainstream medical society, it could possibly create two new medical fields: Endocrinology Psychology and Endocrinology Psychiatry.

#4 The Kill Zone by Justin Zufelt

The Kill Zone by Justin Zufelt
One of the most common forms of addiction is addiction to pornography. This is something I have personally dealt with as a soldier, a police officer, and a recovering addict myself. I used all of my life experience to write a book series entitled The Kill Zone: A Spiritual Survival Guide for Combating Pornography. There is an edition for parents and an edition written directly to youth. The books not only lay out the pornography problem, but they also teach non-denominational Christian principles that will help today’s families overcome the inevitable pornography exposure that they will face. Following is the full information you requested. I would be honored to be listed in your article.

#6 Women Who Love Too Much by Robin Norwood

Women Who Love Too Much by Robin Norwood
All young women are conditioned from an early age that love is going to be a cinderella like an experience – a prince awaits. The reality is that life does not work this way and relationships are complicated. While primal attraction create the start of most relationships, the adrenaline that comes with it is dangerous and can cloud real feelings.

This book explores why women are addicted to the wrong men and consistently find themselves in the same relationship over and over again. The roots of these patterns are explored and the book challenges the adrenaline feeling or learned patterns that some are addicted to vs. the monotony of normal relationships.

Lost in Ghost Town by Dr. Carder Stout PhD
LOST IN GHOST TOWN isn’t just Carder’s story. It’s a raw look at the power of self-medicating, addiction, and hope in the unlikeliest places against the painful backdrop of the substance abuse epidemic currently consuming America and the continued escalation of racial tension in its urban centers.

Now sober for more than fourteen years and free of his gang-days, Carder’s memoir leaves no stone unturned in the making of a man who Hollywood relies on to keep their sanity. From a youth of abandonment and loneliness to the contract the Shoreline Crips put on his life, Carder delves deep into the streets of Ghost Town, and the family who saved him from his own murder.

#12 Childhood Abuse, Body Shame, and Addictive Plastic Surgery

Childhood Abuse, Body Shame, and Addictive Plastic Surgery
Body image expert and world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Mark B. Constantian has emotionally invested in his patients who demand repeated plastic surgery they do not need. These patients have an unrealistic preoccupation with the body or its parts -Body Dysmorphic Disorder. In these patients, BDD, when researched, is typically deeply rooted from a huge childhood trauma and/or neglect, including abuse and creating toxic shame.

Body image and demanding unneeded surgeries (even excessive tattoos, piercings) as in many addictions, becomes a temporary pleasure mechanism for a patient to fill a void to feel more perfect, loved, accepted, able to fit-in, validated, appreciated and valued. They do not fix the deeper-psychological issues. Dr. Constantian has done meta-analysis on this topic and has been studying this for decades – and hopes the book educates so that childhood becomes a regular part of every patient’s history, and so that patients with body image disorders will get the right treatment instead of having more operations.
